Green Roof drainage with AirDrain™ for artificial and natural grass
AirDrain is capable of holding .576 gallons of water per sqft. if needed until it can evacuate from the green roof to the perimeter exit drains, which is a holding capacity equal to approximately 6 inches of compacted gravel.

Build a better green roof with AirDrain. What drains better than air !
Unlike traditional shock pads or e-layers the AirDrain grid is 1″ high, extremely light weight at 3.1 lbs per 7 sqft., 233 psi (unfilled) and has a 92% air void.
Installing the AirField System in green roof applications results in a more stable surface area and a more consistent GMAX across the project. AirDrain’s delivers a 14.7% reduction on cement and a 19% reduction on an aggregate base in GMAX. And that reduction and consistency will stay for the life of the field with AirDrain .
Here is the ASTM D4716 Flow Rate per Unit Width and Hydraulic Transmissivity Testing for actual drainage capacity, at a 1/2% slope. The AirDrain will actually drain 171 inches per hour.
The ASTM D4716 was done with 2 metal plates top and bottom and the grid tilted at a 1/2% slope. This is the only way to be able to claim drainage per hour. Don’t let'em kid ya! If they don’t have this test, ask them why.
There is a big difference between real world drainage on an installed Green roof project and some manufacturers claims of drainage per hour, where they run water through their product being held vertically in the air and claim drainage per hour. You have to vertically drain it into the sub drainage. And then move it horizontally to the perimeter drains that's draining a project.
It’s vertical and lateral drainage unmatched in the industry, all but eliminates standing water and moisture trapped on the rooftop. Making infill migration a thing of the past.
No other product stacks and ships more compactly, reducing the number of trucks and the amount of fuel required to transport AirDrain to 1 truck on a 87,780k sqft. project. That goes straight to the bottom line!
AirDrain drainage can’t be beat by anyone’s product period.
AirDrain’s strength and durability allow it to be used under multiple multiple turf replacements on a green roof project.
In a cost value and performance comparison there is only one choice, AirDrain!

Green Roof AirDrain Drainage – What drains better than air!
No other system comes close in ease of installation, price, value, and performance!!
With over 5+ million sqft. of green roofs installed across the nation since 2002, let us show you how easy and cost effective it is to use AirDrain!
A research project conducted at Texas A&M, has concluded that you can greatly reduce your irrigation needs using AirField Systems AirDrain. The five year research project was jointly funded by the United States Golf Association and AirField Systems and was a collaborative effort between Texas A&M, AirField Systems and the United States Golf Association.
The data from the research showed that the AirField Systems drainage profile can provide up to three more days of plant available water than a United States Golf Association (USGA) recommended gravel and sand profile.
AirDrain geocell has patented expansion and contraction connectors built into the part and can add valuable LEED points to any green roofing project-with a unique and extremely easy to install assembly design and 100% post-manufactured recycled content.
Lightweight at only 3.1 pounds per 7 square feet, with a rating 33,552 psf. AirDrain is the ideal drainage medium for green roof applications, whether decorative or in constant use.
Arriving as 32″ x 32″ inch pallets at 798 sqft. they easily fit into an elevator for transport to a rooftop.
Move water rapidly vertically and horizontally or capture it for retention. With AirDrain’s 92% air void and 400 drainage notches on each side of the part, it’s easy.
Over the years, many architects and engineers have asked us just how fast will the AirDrain grid drain. Our reply has always been that the AirDrain is only limited by what is above it and the exit drains, due to the fact that the area of an AirDrain part is 1” inch high and has a 92% air void.
Recently, our AirDrain grid was tested using the ASTM D 4716 Hydraulic Transmissivity Standard Test Method. The testing was done using plates on top and bottom of the AirDrain part, setting them to the required slope and adding water from the high side of one end down the slope.
AirDrain was draining so fast they had to modify their testing equipment to accommodate the volume of water AirDrain could move!
As it turns out there is practically no resistance to the water draining using the AirDrain grid. The most important factor to consider is the percentage of slope that the AirDrain is sitting on.
For example, it could rain over 171 inches in an hour and AirDrain could drain it on a 1/2% slope.
No other product on the market comes close to AirDrain’s ability to drain a green roof project.
So when you see the claims of manufacturers' rainfall per hour drainage, ask them if they have the test that really shows a product's real world drainage capability.
The ASTM D4716 was done with 2 metal plates top and bottom and the grid tilted at a 1/2% slope. This is the only way to be able to claim drainage per hour. No matter what, the water has to move horizontally through the sub drainage to the perimeter drains!
Don’t let em kid ya ! If they don’t have this test ask them why.
No other product stacks and ships more compactly, reducing the number of trucks and the amount of fuel required to transport AirDrain to 1 truck on a 95k sqft. project.
That goes straight to the bottom line!
Installing the AirField System results in a more stable surface area and a more consistent GMAX across the project. AirDrain delivers a 14.7% on cement and a 18.9% reduction on an aggregate base in GMAX. And that reduction and consistency, will stay for the life of the field with AirDrain .
AirDrain all but eliminates infill migration and a floating field, and helps brings a consistent GMAX across the entire field. (which greatly improves safety and reduces liability risks for the owners.
The AirDrain pallets are designed to be able to be taken up an elevator at 32″ x 32″
Installing the AirDrain on a rooftop with A/C or heat brings 1″ of air between the roof top and the artificial grass, creating an R factor of approximately 2.7 similar to a double thermal pane window. And will also help to keep the turf cooler above !
